Storybook Lady Charitable Foundation is the premier source for information, advice and support regarding "Telling Stories for Life".
Established in April 2005, the foundation provides experience, knowledge, and tools to help educators–and the parents of the children they teach–use storytelling to enrich the lives of our children and, in partnership with children's parents, help build family cohesiveness.
Storytelling:
- Introduces children to a range of story experiences
- Provides young students with models of story patterns, themes, characters, and incidents to help them in their own writing, oral language, and thinking
- Nurtures and encourages a sense of humor in children
- Helps put children's own words in perspective
- Increases knowledge and understanding of other places, races, and beliefs
- Introduces new ideas and is used to question established concepts without threat to the individual
- Leads to discussions that are far ranging and often more satisfying than those arising from formal lessons
- Serves as a way of teaching children to listen, to concentrate, and to follow the thread and logic
The art of storytelling also brings people together; provides positive role models; creates a sense of deep connection from one generation to the next; shows children how to empathize with others who have different values and experiences; exercises imagination and stretches everyone's capacity to feel a full range of emotions.
